Text from Theodore Turley: Divine Gift

By Reuben T. Judd

In July 1849, the Turley family started westward across the plains. They arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in late October. The group included Theodore Turley, Mary Clift, many children from Theodore’s first marriage, and stepson George Selwyn (son of Sarah Ellen Clift). The family settled several blocks east of the town’s center. Theodore continued with his blacksmithing and occasionally helped at the Deseret Mint on Main Street, where they made gold coins for the territory.

In March 1850, Theodore and Mary had a baby girl. They named her Frances Kimberley after Theodore’s first wife. Mary died shortly afterward. On June 18, 1850, Theodore married Ruth Jane Giles. Ruth had a child from before, named Joseph Orson Turley, whom Theodore adopted.
