Joseph Smith Turley and his twin brother, Hyrum Smith Turley, were the sons of Theodore Turley and Sarah Ellen Clift. They were born 5 December 1846 at Winter Quarters (now Omaha), Douglas County, Nebraska.4

Joseph Smith Turley only lived three months. He died of “water in [the] brain” on 5 March 1846. Joseph’s twin brother, Hyrum, died the following month. Both babies were buried in grave number 95 at the Winter Quarters Cemetery.5
